VGMX

How can a local video game store have a unique mark & identity that relates to its focal products?

VGMX

Branding

VGMX (formerly known as Video Game Music Exchange) needed a rebrand in the ever-changing gaming market. While they continued to sell and exchange video games and music, VGMX was shifting their focus to trading card games (TCG) and tabletop board games. They wanted to reflect this shift in focus with an identity that could be versatile, edgy, and responsive. The solution was a design representing a D10, a die used in both areas of focus, creating a simple and unique mark that any tabletop nerd would recognize.

Designer Statement

VGMX was a freelance project that truly pushed me. As I experienced walking through their store, what stuck out to me the most was all of the custom type on the games, movies, etc. This caused me to hand-letter the VGMX, as I realized that a simple google font wasn't going to do. At the same time, I was learning from my favorite designer James Martin, (@made.by.james) who states that type shouldn't simply be an afterthought in identity design; the type and the mark should be created together. With this project I did just that, and was blown away by the result. Moving forward, I strive to always deliver an identity solution that is 100% custom.
